Artist’s Statement

My teaching  method is not a conventional one...I don't only teach about technique, but the philosophy behind the artist mind. I teach my students to “See,” because most of the people go through their life looking at their surroundings, but without “seeing” what's there... I teach my students that “to be an artist” is not only when one is painting, but is a full time job...

What you eat, how you live, the care for your body, healthy and environment is an artist’s task. What music you listen to, movies you watch, poems, books you read, observing Nature’s laws, everything is valid “data” to be input in your artistic mind, data that will come out when you are creating your art piece.

Depending the student level, I have a program that can be easy understood. I like to share time in the atelier with time working in nature. To introduce the Egg Tempera-Oil painting technique, I like that my students start with a copy of an Old Master, so he/she is only concentrated in understanding how this unique and rare technique works, the student is not emotionally involved with his personal creation and vision, and can faster understand this great and complex painting medium.

After the student feels comfortable with this new medium, it’s time to let the imagination run free and wild!
My method is to show each single student their own path in the art domain, and help them in their first steps to became an artist by their own, bring out their own style of art.

Student Testimonial:

I studied with Wal for 1.5 years and learned a tremendous amount of things not only artistically but also philosophically. Wal's attitude of caring and playing with Nature is surely seen in his painting. It always excited me that his paintings were inspired by his multi cultural experiences, in Brazil, Paris, Morocco, New York, Bali, Japan etc. and his keen attention to social and environmental issues especially on the diminishing Amazon forests and the indigenous people who know how to live together with Nature. Drawing a landscape in Nature as you feel it swimming in a river or sea etc, gives you another insight to your perspective in perceiving the Mother Earth and you get closer feeling to what you are drawing.

Also we worked on artworks side by side, which created a great environment which you rarely have in a formal class or academic environment. Technically, it was a great and rare opportunity to learn oil-egg tempera mix technique which comes from the revival of the medium in the 20th century by Fuch. As far as I know, he is the only one who uses that medium in Japan. His art is always imaginary while his class aims to learn basic techniques of drawing and painting as well. Copy of the Old masters helps you learn tradition of representational art.

I'm glad that I came across Wal's class which gave me a great positive impact on my artistic journey as well as personal development. Thank you, Wal.
